She then waited until she was through the first trimester before starting her chemotherapy to clear any remaining cancer cells as it was known then that the toxic drugs could harm the feotus as the internal organs and brain were still developing.
Mrs Swain, now 45, from Essex, said: "I really did not want to do it but I absolutely wanted to live and keep my baby so what choice did I have?"
She researched chemotherapy treatment in pregnancy and found that it was thought the placenta acted as a barrier and kept the harmful drugs from reaching the baby, as is now known.
Mrs Swain, who does volunteer work, carried her baby to full term and gave birth naturally to a boy, called Luke, now nine.
The couple have an older boy, Max who is ten.
