Law leads to 18 month wait for fertility treatment

Dr Madhavi Gudipati, a clinical research fellow, said that their waiting list first appeared in 2007 and had grown to 18 months by 2010.

She told delegates at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), in Stockholm, that more patients were now sourcing sperm from abroad. While only of the clinic?s clients had done so before 2005, 12 had in 2010 alone.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has just finished consulting on ways to increase egg and sperm donations.

One idea is to raise the limit on the number of families that can use sperm from one donor, which is currently 10. Another ? more controversial ? is to increase the amount donors are paid.

Lisa Jardine, the HFEA?s chair, said in January it was not consulting on reversing the law preventive anonymity. She said protecting the rights of conceived children was paramount.
