Goodbye, My Friend

This morning I learned that my 5-year old grandson's other grandmother had committed suicide. It's such a tragedy, she left a 24-year old pregnant daughter, our shared grandson, and all the people who cared about her.

I understand she was in severe emotional stress most of her life, but wonder why she couldn't just pick up the phone and talk to someone. It wasn't her first attempt, but I wonder if she knew that no one would find her and save her this time. It's been a sad day for everyone in her large extended family of siblings, as well as her mother.

The fact is that we all feel a bit down from time-to-time, but real depression -- clinical depression affects the whole body and mind. It affects both the personal and work life of the depressed person.

If someone you know shows any of the warning signs for suicide, you should try to get them to talk to someone about their feelings.

Some options include going to a local mental health provider, taking? the person to the nearest hospital, or calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.

The most important thing is that you take action to help prevent a suicide from occurring.

Goodbye Karla Z., I wish I could have been there for you.
