Surgeons should inform women if they have PIP breast implants: regulator

"There was no possible way of directly contacting the patients concerned because we do not have their identities.

"It's up to the health care professionals who implanted these devices to communicate with their patients whom they know and to take matters forward."

Initial action was taken in March 2010 when the alleged fraud came to light when clinics were told not to use PIP implants.

In December the French authorities decided to recommend that all women there who had PIPs should have them removed and that the Government would pay for the surgery.

In Britain, expert advice and research has not found any increased risk of cancer and it is not clear whether there is a greater risk of rupture than with other implants, Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director told the Committee.

He is conducting reviews of the PIP scandal and the wider regulation of cosmetic procedures and implants.

Private clinics have a 'moral' duty to remove PIP implants where women are concerned, Sir Bruce said.

Around 1,000 women have so far contacted the NHS due to concerns over their implants, Sr Bruce said.
