Scientists have discovered a highly accurate way to establish which women will develop pre-eclampsia, a condition which can be fatal if left untreated.
The key problem so far has been separating which women only have high blood pressure and which have high blood pressure linked to pre-eclampsia.
Doctors at the Mayo Clinic, which has hospitals across America, found that certain kidney cells are shed into the urine in women who have high blood pressure who will go on to develop pre-eclampsia but not in others.
The findings were presented as part of the American Society of Nephrology's Annual Kidney Week.
Dr Vesna Garovic and colleagues tested 315 women. In the group 15 developed preeclampsia and 15 developed high blood pressure but not preeclampsia.
