Only one in seven pregnant women have had a flu jab figures show

All pregnant women are recommended to be vaccinated against seasonal flu this winter but so far only one in seven, or 51,000, have so far received the jab.

Uptake rates are also low among younger people with long-term conditions such as heart disease or diabetes as only one in three has so far been vaccinated.

The figures were released by the Department of Health two months after the winter flu campaign was launched.

Uptake rates among the elderly were better with more than half having received their vaccination already.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer, urged those with long-term conditions to be vaccinated saying they were at greater risk of fatal complications from flu than the general population.
