Alzheimer's disease is a major topic of health news stories, which regularly cover everything from potential cures to possible ways to prevent the disease in the first place.
With an estimated 465,000 of cases of Alzheimer's disease in the UK this news coverage is keenly read, not just by those whose lives have been affected by the disease, but also people worried that they might develop the disease in their later years.
Since 2007, the Behind the Headlines team hasexamined dozens of news stories on Alzheimer?s disease so we thought it was time to take a look at how the mainstream media has covered the condition in recent years. Our report, Alzheimer's in the news [PDF 5Mb], looks back over Alzheimer's coverage to identify some of the more important stories and some which were wide of the mark.
The reportalso identifies key themes and common problems in the news reports and, hopefully, will help readers judge future news reports for themselves. Finally, we ask leading experts to predict what research and experimental treatments will be making headlines in the months and years to come.
